Reminiscnece 3rd Progress: Environment and lightning.

The atmosphere in Reminiscence is crucial to creating a sense of tension and immersion. I'll talk about how I've transformed the environment with darkness and dynamic lighting to enhance the eerie, suspenseful experience.

A World of Shadows

The world of Reminiscence is now plunged into complete darkness. Every environment is designed to evoke a feeling of isolation and unease. The absence of natural light adds a layer of mystery to the game’s world, making every flicker of light a beacon of hope or danger.

Candles: Lighting Up the Path

To combat the oppressive darkness, we’ve scattered candles throughout the map. These candles, combined with the ones carried by the player, create small safe zones of light, making them critical for survival.

  • Environmental Candles: Candles placed around key locations light up specific areas, providing brief moments of relief from the surrounding darkness.
  • Player’s Candle: Your candle is more than just a tool for navigation—it’s your lifeline in a world without light. As mentioned in previous devlogs, your candle can be stacked, used strategically, and its light will gradually fade over time.

Dynamic Lighting

We’ve implemented a sophisticated lighting system that dynamically reacts to the player’s actions and the environment. As you move through the world, every flame you light and every candle you pass casts real-time shadows, creating depth and adding to the overall tension.

  • Strategic Light Placement: You’ll need to think carefully about how and when you use light. With limited candles and fading light, finding new sources or saving candles for when you truly need them becomes a strategic part of the gameplay.
