In this devlog, let's share two key features that will add depth and challenge to the experience in Reminiscence: the Mortal Darkness mechanic and the introduction of books scattered around the map, which players can interact with.
Mortal Darkness:
The Mortal Darkness mechanic is designed to test your survival instincts. Standing too long in complete darkness won’t just leave you vulnerable—it will slowly drain your sanity.
- How It Works: If the player remains in darkness for an extended period, their sanity will begin to degrade. This will be reflected through visual feedback—distorted camera effects, blurring, and other unsettling visuals will signal that your mental state is deteriorating.
- Sanity Drops: If your sanity drops too low, the consequences become dire. The more your sanity fades, the worse the visual effects, and if it reaches a critical point, death will be inevitable.
- Recovering Sanity: The only way to regain sanity is to return to a light source or light a candle. The sooner you find light, the faster you’ll recover. Manage your time in darkness carefully, or risk losing your grip on reality.
New Item: Books as Interactive Notes
As you navigate the dark world, you’ll also come across books, scattered in hidden or hard-to-reach areas. These books contain crucial notes that will help uncover the mysteries of the game’s narrative.
- Interactivity: Players can pick up and interact with these books using the “E” key. Each book contains a unique message, offering clues, lore, or hints to help you progress.
- Pause and Read: While reading a book, the game will temporarily pause, allowing you to focus on the content. Once you’re finished, the book will disappear, marking that you’ve collected its information.
- Atmospheric Design: These books add another layer of immersion to the game.
